Telstra Virtual Server (shared)

Virtual Server (shared) aka CSX, Utility Hosting

Virtual Server (Shared) is a Telstra owned and operated Infrastructure as a Service platform, delivered out of Telstra’s data centres, running on shared infrastructure with each virtual data centre logically separated.

It has been in market since late 2011 and is available both domestically and globally. No matter where you activate your service, you are able to connect your virtual data centre’s to your private Next IP network for a $100 once fee per virtual data centre.

Availability

The DH on CSX environment is currently available in the following Telstra operated data centres:

  • Melbourne, Australia
  • London, United Kingdom
  • Hong Kong
  • Singapore
  • United States (US East)

Networking:

The private network interconnect is a real differentiator when it comes to the market. You have your virtual infrastructure connected to the core of your network for virtually no cost. It makes even more of an impact when you gave two geographically separated instances and you want to replicate data between them. Bandwidth is provided by a bandwidth-in-abundance model, meaning that you get access to extreme speeds at no additional costs and Telstra manages the links.

To allow you to configure and manage your solution securely, you can also create up to 10 SSL VPN connections at no additional charge. The SSL VPN allows you to manage your virtual infrastructure, but it’s not designed to be a remote access solution.

Building Virtual Servers:

The platform allows you to provision new virtual servers based on a defined set of operating system templates including Windows and Linux, using your web browser.

The currently available list of operating systems include:

  • CentOS® 5.x (32/64-bit)
  • CentOS 6.x (32/64-bit)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x (32/64-bit)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.x (32/64-bit)
  • SUSE Enterprise Linux 10 (32/64-bit)
  • SUSE Enterprise Linux 11 (32/64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 – Enterprise R2 (32*/64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 – Enterprise SP2 (32*/64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 – Enterprise R2 (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 – Web R2 (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 – Data Center (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 – Data Center R2 (64-bit)

Software Applications:

You can also pick from a range of add-on’s to complete your solution. This includes software and application licensing, network and security solutions, backup solutions and data import and export.

The currently available software applications include:

Because the virtual machines run on shared physical infrastructure, certain software such as Microsoft Office is prohibited by its licensing terms from running on another vendors shared platform. To overcome this, Telstra provides the following operating systems and software licensing available for your consumption on a monthly basis.

Service and Contract Terms

The virtual server (shared) platform is available on a monthly agreement. There are also a number of plans that allow you to get additional pools of resources based on a minimum monthly commitment.

Service Management

This shared and dedicated cloud infrastructure services above are managed using Telstra’s Cloud Services Management Console (CSMC). The CSMC includes a full library of documentation that will help you getting up and running.
